On Friday, Iran announced 149 new deaths from the emerging coronavirus, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 1,433, the largest in the world after Italy and China.
Deputy Health Minister Ali Reza Raisi said that 1,237 new cases of the virus have been recorded in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 19,644 since the authorities announced the discovery of infections on Iranian soil on February 19.
This announcement coincided with Nowruz, that is the beginning of the Iranian New Year.
In an attempt to curb the spread of the disease, the authorities demanded that residents refrain from traveling, especially during this period of the year, which usually witnesses heavy internal travel.

On Thursday, state television broadcast pictures of the temperatures of passengers on hundreds of cars, which revealed a widespread lack of commitment to the recommendations of the authorities in the country.
Referring to France and Italy, where the authorities imposed isolation measures on the population and prevented unnecessary movements, a key advocate of Iran's decision not to resort to "coercive force".
He added that on the outskirts of some cities in 13 governorates, travelers were identified with the disease and "sent to their homes", while the authorities previously announced that any traveler suffering from the virus or suspected of receiving the infection would be immediately placed in quarantine.
It is noteworthy that Iran is one of the countries most affected by the virus, and ranks third in the world in terms of the mortality rate of the emerging virus.
Yesterday, Iranian Health Ministry spokesman Kianosh Jahanpur sounded the alarm of a large outbreak, as he confirmed that 50 people were infected every hour with the virus, and one person died every 10 minutes.

The authorities say that the epidemic has become uncontrollable in light of the rapid spread and the failure of citizens to isolate and avoid exiting only when necessary.

"We have not reached the peak point in the country yet regarding the Coruna virus. We will face a dangerous situation if the necessary health recommendations by citizens are not adhered to," the Iranian news agency, IRNA, quoted Mohammad Reza Zafarqandi, head of the Medical System Organization in Iran, as saying.
He considered that "stopping the escalating stage of the virus depends on the actions of officials and the commitment of citizens," adding: "We will be able to cross the peak phase faster if we can raise the rate of isolation and stay in homes by 15% to 20%."
